On saying “yes”

As a mom, how many times a day do we say no?

Ummmmmmmm, I don’t know about you, but I think I say it roughly 9,232 times a day.

So every so often, we have a couple pretty rockin days in a row…ya know, kids having good attitudes, getting along, nice weather…when the stars really align.  Then I like to have a “yes” day. And yesterday was that day.  And truth be told, this day is totally for me! They may have fun, but only a fraction of the fun that I am having!!

I never tell the kids we are having one of these days for obvious reasons {Mom, can I have a barbie dream house? Can we go to Disney World? Can we go see Ella and Claire?} I would instantly be “no-ing”.  So instead, I treat the day like a normal one, except for instead of being so quick with my no’s, I try to swap out for “yes’s”. This is actually harder than it sounds…

We talked about breakfast, and when we decided on McDonalds, they asked “Can we eat inside?” {Good God Nooooooo!} YES. “Can we play?” YES. “Can I have more sausage?” YES.Processed with VSCO with t1 presetProcessed with VSCO with t1 preset

Then came getting ready for church. “Can I wear a dress” YES. “This {summer} dress?” YES {with a coat}. “Can I wear these shoes?” YES. “Can I wear a ponytail?” YES. All of these are obviously Stella questions, and these small things ring big with her.

And their Sunday pictures: “Can we bring the bear in it? Outside?” YES. “Can we sit on him” YES.Processed with VSCO with t1 presetProcessed with VSCO with t1 preset

After church it was “Can we skip rest?” YES. {Please note I had already pretty much decided they could so that we could hit the park and enjoy the sunshine}. This got a big woo hoo from them! But before the park came a run to Walmart for groceries and to let Stella pick out her birthday cupcakes.  “Can we look at the toys?” YES. “Can we get a toy? With our money?” YES. “Can I pick the yogurt?”YES.Processed with VSCO with t1 presetProcessed with VSCO with t1 presetProcessed with VSCO with t1 preset

The day went on like that..”Can we listen to song #7 in the car?” “Can we listen to it again?” “And again?”

“Can we go to the park?” “Can our friends come?” “Can I take off my coat?” {I instinctually said NO, but caught myself…it wasn’t that cold and their friends were coatless…and I gotta let them learn at some point right?? So I flipped it with a YES. And you guys, they lit up! So excited. Such a small thing}. “Can I take off my shoes?”Processed with VSCO with t1 presetProcessed with VSCO with t1 presetProcessed with VSCO with t1 presetProcessed with VSCO with t1 preset

“Can I help you fix dinner?” Woah boy. Today I realized how often she asks to help, and how quick I am to say “later” because we are busy trying to get out the door, or dinner on the table, or clothes on…it is hard to slow down.  But after today it’s a high priority of mine to take on all of her “Can I help?” I should be so lucky, right?Processed with VSCO with t1 preset

“Can I have a drink of your soda?” “Can I sit in Dad’s chair for dinner?” “Can I sit on your lap?” ON AND ON….

For Beau it was yes-ing all of his “hold you”s, and following through with the “more” when he wanted me to repeatedly step up and down the small incline of gravel at the park… over and over and over again. Or “yes-ing” with a walk to the lion water fountain, when he pointed from afar roaring.Processed with VSCO with t1 preset

Our day wasn’t crazily different…FOR THEM…but boy did it feel different for me.  Aside from realizing how many times I’m quick to jump to “no” during our day, it made me think about how all the things they ask during the day may seem small to me, but matter so big to them.  It’s pretty eye-opening how they reacted when I was quick to throw a ‘yes’ back at them.  Their grins and laughs of surprise when I quickly gave on some of the small stuff.  It is so much fun to feel like the good guy!

Yesterday was full of lots of good stuff and lots of learning, lots of yes’s and lots of smiles. I am already looking forward to our next “yes” day.

Have a great week all! Chad says the weather is warming back up {which I LOVVVVEE} so get out while you can and soak it up! If you are local, we will probably see you at the park!

xoxo
